"Our longstanding industry leadership, brand equity and user preferences are a result of our state-of-the-art engineering, ongoing research and development, meticulous product standards and our dedicated customer support teams," said Claire O’Reilly, director, channel marketing, Cooper Lighting Solutions.

History of Cooper Lighting

The beginning of what Cooper Lighting Solutions is today goes back to 1956. At that time, the HALO Lighting Co. was founded with the philosophy of manufacturing recessed downlighting fixtures that would be attractive, simple to install and easy to service. HALO is still the industry’s leading brand of choice today.

In 1967, HALO became part of a larger corporation when acquired by McGraw-Edison. The corporation itself had only been finalized in 1957 when Max McGraw (whose business roots went back to the 1920s) wrote a letter to the son of Thomas Edison suggesting a merger between their two companies. The name of Edison—"The Great Inventor"—continues in the Cooper stable of product lines today.

In 1985, HALO entered a new area of lighting with the acquisition of Metalux Lighting, one of the premier manufacturers of lighting for commercial, industrial and residential markets. Big news came later in 1985 when Cooper Industries acquired McGraw-Edison and its holdings included HALO, Metalux and Sure-Lites.

Cooper Lighting’s Major Brands

Cooper Lighting was formed in 1987 with these major brands resulting from this union. These well-known industry product lines, which still exist today, now lead the industry with the most advanced LED technologies:

  • HALO: Brand leader of high-quality recessed downlights, surface, track and outdoor solutions
  • Metalux: Commercial and industrial recessed, linear, surface and high bay solutions
  • Lumark: Outdoor lighting providing energy savings and superior safety for commercial/industrial spaces
  • McGraw-Edison: Specification outdoor lighting offering superior optical precision, versatility and performance
  • Sure-Lites: Commercial and industrial emergency lighting fixtures, exits, battery packs and inverters

Additional lighting and controls brands were added since then and include Corelite, HALO Commercial, Portfolio, Lumière, Fail-Safe, Neo-Ray, Streetworks, Invue, Ephesus, among others.

"Our extensive breadth of lighting, controls and connected lighting solutions satisfies every indoor and outdoor commercial, industrial, residential, institutional, retail and sport lighting need," O’Reilly said. "Lighting technologies continue to advance, and our decades of expertise allows us to be at the forefront of the industry in helping our customers adhere to the changing energy landscape and construction demands by leveraging the latest technologies to improve efficiency, reduce costs and meet code compliances and environmental goals."
